Let me know when you plan to do one, I'd like to watch and see how it is set up. I've not done done and am not quite sure about the lift mechanism with the signs and water. Also, there seems to be some discrepancy about whether you need to be within a certain number of blocks from the spawner or not within that distance. Only one answer can be right - do mobs spawn within about 16 blocks of the player or not within that distance?

Sorry I didn't see this earlier. I've done the basics for the skele grinder just need to make it look nicer and more accessible. I'll show it to you when we meet online.

When you go a certain distance from the spawner and if it's still visible you can see it stops spinning at that point you know it's not going to spawn any monsters. I think it's the 16 block rule, but I usually just guess it :) I know it works when monsters start dropping down the drop shaft.
If you want to be sure, just dig a straight line from the spawner until you see it stop spinning and shooting out flames.

This is of course just to keep the monsters spawning, they can go a long way after they spawn, so as long as your within 16 blocks and they end up close to you, your good.

I'm ready to buy a custom portal from Troll Mtn to our (not quite yet established) portal hub. We need to at least lay out the basic floor plan - how we want the the portals arranged, so I can tell Ray where to put mine. I'm OK with a basic rectangle,or square layout, with the portals forming a perimeter around a central square. We need to decide how many portals to allow for for future expansion.

I can see us having a few to the wilds, perhaps our own nether eventually. And if everyone gets one to their house, and we might have portals to specific places in our map, we could anticipate 9-12 portals maybe?

I'm getting a portal to our hub rather than to Limbo. I can quickly hop over to the Limbo portal from there - plus if you guys get your own portals then I can come visit you.

12 sounds reasonable, not to much and still a lot of possibilities. As to the design, I haven't given it any thought. I'm generally open to anything, since I will be mostly busy with IRL until late summer.

Maybe we could set up a meet in Trollaria for an hour or two and decide on this?

a meeting would be good, if we could layout the foundations of the floor of the portal hub and where we want the portals with some dirt blocks, we can build up around that when we are ready

what's a good time and day? This weekend is pretty open for me

I laid out a proposed portal arrangement for twelve portals with dirt blocks. I was thinking of an open to the sky building, sort of like a druid temple thing. A nice colorful floor with a geometric pattern, but no walls or ceiling. We could later put the rail hub underneath if we want. Lighting could be in the floor with glowstone, I'm a little short - anyone have some? I quite like the use of netherack in floors for the red color, and it contrasts nicely with obsidian -which I have some of both. Kamel - you've seen the floors in my throne room - maybe something like that? Sandstone looks nice to give a white contrast. Personally I don't like to use wool in floors, although it gives more color choices. I don't like that squishy sound when you walk on it. I think for a portal room it needs to sound like you are walking on stone.

The rail line to Kamelose's house will need some minor re-routing.

I didn't want to make the structure too large or grandiose since to get bigger it will take a lot of landscaping to level the surface. But if we want the portals further apart or in a different arrangement, say in a square, we'd have to do more landfill.

Let me know what you guys think.

Ok, nice. Let's try and meet on Saturday or Sunday, I'll let you know when and if I'm available. I got my final in fish-biology on Wednesday and I'm studying hard for it. I have some extra glowstone, it's in the nether related chest if you need it. Rerouting the rail line is no problem!

We can always expand or make another hub if we run out of space.

ok - just send me a day and time and I can be there as long as it's reasonable time EDT - which related to your time zone would not be too ungodly early.

Portal Hub Floor

I propose our portal hub be open air. No walls or ceiling, just a floor with the portals around the perimeter. Stonehenge kind of thing I've laid portal locations out in dirt blocks have a look.
Here is a possible design for the floor. The black boxes are the portals. Yellow is glowstone, red is nether rack. The ? blocks could be sandstone, that gives a nice contrast. Also nice would be obsidian - I think that would look find since they would only be adjacent to the black portals at the outside block. Also, to make it so you don't have to jump up into the portal we either need to raise the floor level with the bottom opening of the portal (hiding the bottom blocks, or we need to make a step of some kind. I noticed the Limbo portal hub uses half slabs - but I think a step or half slab would mess up the floor tile pattern, unless we wanted to burn some obsidian blocks making half slabs - can you make a step or half slab with obsidian? nope - it looks like you can't.

Please let me know your opinions - and if the open air idea doesn't sound good that is fine, just let me know what you want the structure to look like.

Portal Hub floor is done. Kamel, I took 4x64 glowstone dust from your nether chest as you offered. That covered about half of the glowstone needed.

The hub has one additional working portal - to Troll Mtn. The rest are black wool dummies for now.

I decided to make them look more like monoliths standing in an open space I built the floor beneath them, required you to jump up to enter them - sorry. Looks over function in this case. I can't think of any kind of step that would look good with the floor, so I hope you all don't mind jumping.

For outside decoration I just wrapped the platform in black wool for now. If anyone has any further ideas feel free.

I am thinking we should tear down the portal house. It does not fit with the the hub. We could move it under the hub so a chest, crafting table etc could be kept there.
