The SG community came to my rescue this week when I had trouble staying in the game. Now that I know what some of you are capable of, I have another issue.
I have a minecraft.bat file that I start the game with. It's supposed to give me plenty of ram to play with but no matter what, I still get an out of memory screen after about 10-15 minutes.
The line of the .bat file that allocates is as follows-

C:\Program files (x86)\Java\jre7\bin\javaw.exe -Xmx4096M -Xms2048M -jar

When I'm in the game, it says I only have 1 meg of memory.
Does anyone have a better script or another plug-in that fixes this problem?
I have worms in my mouth, so I wait with baited breath.

Silly question, but do you actually physically have enough ram to dedicate 4 gigs to java? Do you have 64 bit versions of windows and java installed? Generally in 32- bit windows the most any one program is allowed to use is 2GB.

I've also had very bad luck with Java 7 in general. You may want to try downgrading to the latest version of Java 6.

I use Magic Launcher with Optifine plugin which solved my problem with memory running out.

Click on the version (scroll down) that is for the PC or Mac, skip the ad and you should see it.

Here is Optifine which is loaded into Magic Launcher as a mod. No unzip required.

Ahhh, Sixty Gig. Once again the community came through for one of its own.
Thanks to Simon, I have my memory problems under control. (fingers crossed)
I downloaded Magic Launcher and used it to install Optifine.
I now have 4 gigs of ram for MC - a huge amount. (my eyes are crossed)
Mojang should learn from Google and buy those 2 programs for rolling into MC.
I'm so excited about my gaming potential that I could pee. (legs crossed)

In windows, you have to set the memory size in the java control panel:
