Showing up late to add to the cost issue, harvesting netherrack to smelt at a 4:1 brick-to-block ratio isn't that difficult with even stone picks (once we get the ubiquitous overwhelming stacks of coal that comes from the initial stripmining of the wilds and/or clearcutting forests for builds.)

*Cough* Lava *cough*

I never claimed to be late on account of my "Know-What-I'm-Talking-About-Society" meeting running long.

P.S. You could use the current Wilds portal platform as the basis of a great road design... There's something for everyone there! ;)

I like those smooth slabs around the edges...

Random assortments of different colored stained glass with stone slabs? If we are throwing other options out there against Ray's telling us not (to, too, two?). ;)

P.s. I hate english grammar and the use of homophones.

too* (too = "Also", easy way to remember)

..and I think we should use diamond blocks for the border, nek keeps telling me that's unreasonable though.

..sigh.. I thought that's why we were using slave labor.

Hang on... I thought, way back when the reset was first discussed, that you said a vet-maintained rail and road network.

We're voting on how this will look etc., but I understood that Nek was building it all.

There is nothing in either of your quotes that is inconsistent with Ray's comment.

Nek. and Ray are using all of these votes to give us plebs 'ownership' of the roads and rails, so we'll happily build them over the next 2-3 years... we are the slave-labour referred to!

Considering the options, and the way this vote it going, can we band together and vote on sunken stuff? It appears the majority of us agree on sunken-stairs, but I think the ground-level stuff looks bad. The whole RP aspect of that small space between the stairs and path being a waterway is silly. Especially if train tracks are going in right next to it.

IMO, it looks bad and I personally have always disliked the disjointed appearance of that setup.

I think a sunken path adds texture. Imagine the rails at ground level, framed by a sunken path. It looks more interesting than having rails and road, all at ground level, spanning, what, 10 blocks wide across the whole map?

EDIT: Upon a very quick glance at all the sunken options, it seems if we who like sunken things vote on ONE sunken thing, we will have the majority vote. So I am changing my vote to netherbrick since that is the most popular sunken option.

Judging from the poll answers it seems there 2 preferences for main road : stone bricks or netherbrick
and 2 preferences for side pavement : smooth stone and brick stairs.

Given the fact that using brick stairs and brick stone is not aesthetically "viable", it seems that there are actually 3 material (and 5 placement) combinations left...

... since Irysh mentioned rails I hope that you are considering elevated rails as well... it would make more sense that way, both space wise and for looks... I myself even tried making a design with rails above road in the current SG map...

I love the idea of elevated rails. It gives the opportunity for some really pretty designs.

The rail design is already finalized, and yes, it's partially elevated. ;)

As with anything i am sure a percentage of people will not like the rail design, to be honest it's a pretty simple cut and dry system. I have been working on a presentation, perhaps i will have it complete this weekend to demonstrate its functionality.

The rails will not follow the roads, technically the roads are intended to follow the terrain from point A to point B, while the rails will be direct, this is intended to make them cost effective and simple to build rather than a roller coaster that makes you queasy while riding them. The only thing the roads and rails are intended to have in common are the destinations.

Refusing to allow people to be paid less than a living wage preserves to us our own market. There is absolutely no use in producing anything if you gradually reduce the number of people able to buy even the cheapest products. The only way to preserve our markets is to pay an adequate wage. -- Eleanor Roosevelt

A final question was added to the Road Poll for a finalized design...

Please Revote on the designs listed on Question #4

Note : You may have to delete and do your votes over, only Question #4 matters from here on tho...

Voting for stone brick slabs so that smaller roads throughout personal properties can be consistent with main roads. I know for sure I'm not going into the nether for countless hours to try to get enough brick for my village roads and stuff.

Hoping people keep this in mind. Nether brick is quite pretty, but not everyone goes to the nether.

Of course, this is only relevant if you like consistency through the entire map and not just main roads. :)

Could I suggest/ask that when we build roads to follow the landscape.. that we make them with a flat gradient and not too steep?

Ie. have a rule that the road can only climb one block in height say every 4 or 5 blocks in distance?
