Here's something for consideration; given that we will very soon have the capability of transport by flight (there's already designs that are bidirectionally automated - i.e. via docking stations) what are you're views as to the longevity of implementing railway systems (especially large scale)?

IMO it's going to come down to a basic evaluation: speed v resource spend.

I suppose it may be difficult to implement a dispensing system (actually I can already think of a few ideas for that - maybe not so bad really). Is this something to be considered for future iterations of SG?

I expect I am going to be honor bound to use the rails for quite a long time after having put so much effort into them.

The new slime blocks in 1.8 make blocks stick together when pushed by pistons ;)

@nuluvus:
I'm actually not sure if you're suggesting that we use flying on the current map, or if it would be a possibility of different maps (hopefully far into) the future. I'm not sure about this, but aren't flying machines as they currently exist somewhat slow? With the new minecart dynamics coming in 1.8 I'd think rails would be a better bet. If you are suggesting we use them on the current map, I don't really see the point, but if we ever have to reset again (please mojang, no), they could be used for transportation before rails or other forms of travel are set up. :)

Oh, like one of those flying cars I saw my son making the other day?

No thanks. I'll take the train.

Cranky at best. If I fall off the track it's a pain, if I fall of a Mojang flying machine it's curtains for me.

How are boats coming along Mojang???  8-/

I'd imagine any flying machine would be super laggy and buggy. I'll stick with rails or horses, I just take a book like on all good train journeys.

nary a whisper about boats in the new release content as far as I can tell.

My point exactly GT, buggy and glitchy wee boats after all this time and the Swedes add more "features" instead of fixing.

It makes Captain want to hang up his oars.

Flying works at a rate of one block per piston move. Rails are going to be updated to be even faster with the new update.

Flying is SUUUUUPPPPPERRRR SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWW.

As a tram system between my castle towers, possibly. But not for long distance travel.

Indeed; they are slow, given the speed enhancement this is only compounded. However one does gain at the least automated bidirectional locomotion on any given axis and even the potential for omnidirectional locomotion (if it is possible). This combined with the steep resource trade off... it's attractive if not just for the sake of playing around.

That design better caters for a mobile home. With the small mount of time I had free this weekend I managed to do a few things. At least both automated and manual bi direction locomotion over a given axis is defiantly possible (tried and tested). Don't know about omnidirectional locomotion as yet.

It is interesting. Had a go at this once and found cornering to be somewhat annoying v speed.
