I am weeding through my texture packs to find a good lava. (and to get rid of some of the really ugly packs i had filling up my folder).
I have found a few decent packs and some that have some good items and some lame items but are worth keeping since it is now so easy to mix and match. I am really liking that mixing program texmix, y'all should give it a try and customize a pack to suite your tastes. I am going to create few packs.
Instead of posting a million pictures again, I will mention decent packs I run across and post a link to some screenshots I put in photobucket folders. You can look a t them as a slideshow and not have to keep clicking on the pictures.
This is a medieval pack that has some awesome textures. It isn't perfectly to my liking but I may use the mixer to replace a few textures i don't like and make a customized medieval pack for occasional use. It may have been updated. I downloaded it months ago, so if you like it, check for a newer version. I like the mossystone and lava. The pumpkins look stupid, they are the face of jack skellington but I don't think they go well with the pack. The netherrack is kind of cool, it is a pattern of skulls, but I think I prefer a non-red netherrack so I may switch it out. The wood looks kind of cool though. I think it's a decent pack.
Creative One's medieval pack
This one is Overgrown. It is a toxic, overgrown looking world. It might be fun if you want a change of pace. It is very green, almost everything is green and brown. It reminds me of Borderlands. I may keep it just to spice up the game every now and then. It may have updates, I downloaded it a long time ago and it has nothing for tall grass so you will have to update it or add a few textures if you want to use it.
Overgrown
This one is called Ornate. It has some beautiful wood and glass. I may use the mixer to change a few things and make a pack using a lot of stuff from this texture pack. It is a bit too brown but with just a little tweaking it could be a great pack.
Ornate
Stanke is only so so but it has decent lava and glass that I may use in a customized pack. Some people may like the droplets the rain makes.
Stanke
Woocraft is an Asian themed pack. I would replace some of the textures if I used it but the paper lanterns are really cool and many of the paintings are nice. I'm going to keep it and make myself a customized Asian pack later.
Woocraft
I remember downloaded some other packs a couple of weeks ago. I will add them to my texture folder and have a look at them later. I remember an Egyptian one that looked promising and a few others that might turn out to be pretty good.

I have been playing around with that texture pack mixer program because i didn't like the obsidian, lava and couple other things in the default Steampunk pack. After a lot of trial and error I finally have a decent pack but I may still change a few things. I can't decide which lava to use. I looked through all the alternate textures inside Glimmar's extras and there are tons of really cool textures. I couldn't find a good obsidian so I ended up using the one from John Smith's pack. I wanted purple but all the purply ones looked terrible with the Steampunk so I used his, which is black with white threads.
Here is my progress thus far.
First attempt to find a purple obsidian, didn't look quite right so I rejected it.
Trying to find a good mossy stone. This one was only so so, a little too bright for this pack.
There was a sheet called "metal steampunk" or something to that affect in the alternatives folder so I checked it out. The glass is metal grates, which look okay but I use so much glass it was just too much and they used some strange things as grass and flowers. I used some textures off the sheet in my final product though. They have some cool stuff on that terrain sheet.
The grates look okay but I want to see out more so I rejected them.
The obsidian I tried didn't blend well so I had to reject it also. The lava is okay although a bit orange, I have it on my "maybe" list. I have to remember where I got it from though.
I think this was created mostly off that metal steampunk page. It had green lava. It looks odd. I tried yet another purple obsidian but it didn't look right.
The metal texture they used for netherrack isn't that bad. If I ever change from the copper plates I may go with this one. You can see how the obsidian I tried clashed. I had to reject it.
At first I was going to use this texture for bedrock but I ended up making it the obsidian. It is from John Smith's pack I believe.
Glimmar has a ton of stained glass textures that are beautiful. I made a purple one obsidian but it looked so goofy I had to take it out. I decided to use this one as purple wool instead.
Getting there. I started to find some good mossy stone. I can't decide which lava to use. This is the dark one that is okay looking.
The purple stained glass looked okay on the portal but looked silly on the skull so I didn't use it as obsidian.
Now we're cookin' with oil. This obsidian looks better.
This is the lava I went with (I think). It looks really good flowing but when you have spots of standing still next to flowing it looks patchy and odd.
Now the portals look cool. I used that black obsidian and found a steampunk machine design to use as bedrock.
I used this dark texture as gravel. I can't tell if it is metal or wood but it looks good with the pack.
The decorative thingy with the lighter colored lava.
Look how cool my roads look now. The outer line is netherrack, the next one is stone slabs, and the middle is stone. Now it looks uber steampunky and goes well together.
Okay, my firetruck looks a bit strange now but I can live with it. I used some metal textures for some of the colors of wool, and some of the stained glass ones for others. They were too cool to pass up. I'll just have to put up with the items that look a bit odd now.
The kitchen inside the firestation
A hotel lobby. The floor is obsidian and purple wool.
Some of my hotel rooms look a bit extreme now But I don't care.
This pattern was so cool I wanted to use it so I made it the pink wool. It's a bit extreme for pink, but oh well.
There are a lot more lovely wool patterns but I won't post them all.
This a bit of coal in the wall. I chose ore that was inside metal that matched what I chose for the stone. It isn't the same size squares but if I used the large squares as stone it didn't look quite right with the copper plates I use for netherrack. If I change the netherrack to that other metal plate I showed in the thread earlier, I will change the stone to a larger bronze plate so it matches the ore better. For now I will just deal with this little pattern mismatch.
This is an alternate skin for the squids. I can't decide whether to use this one or that stained glass one in the default steampunk pack. They both look cool. There are alts for most mobs but I haven't taken screenshots of them yet.

I am using Glimmar's Steampunk textures at the moment. I will post some shots of those and later post some of other texture packs I like. I may use the mixer program to customize Glimmar's but for now this is what it looks like.
My tower of Doom in the community zone
A squid
My Snowman tunnel in the amusement park
My pueblo
Some shots of my zone. All The netherrack looks like copper plates.

I used sandstone double slabs on the Pueblo roofs. The roof is a half slab so it looks sunken in and cool and when I need to start a wall for the second story rooms rooms I have to lay another half slab so the wall doesn't have a gap under it. I never plan ahead and don't know where I am going to end up building the second story rooms, so I just lay the whole roof and then decide where a room will look good.
Some texture packs may may double slabs look different but I don't think mine does. Thoranzalar and I are the explanation for some, if not all, the sandstone double slabs due to our Pueblos.

This nether seed is way hard. It doesn't seem to have all that much glowy. Thor and I spent hours in there, used up like half a chest of cobble, and ended up with only a stack and a half of glowstone. (after conversion back to glowstone blocks) Most of what we found was over lava so we had to make huge platforms to get to it, which means we can't reclaim our cobble.
The ghasts seem to be uber-powered or something. I would poke my head out of a tunnel or hidey hole and get shot before I could even see where they were. This month is going to be rough one for gathering glowy.
Ery may be right and we have to turn down the iron announcements, they are going to get old after a while.
