It's not the phone that's the issue (Skype and Facetime achieve excellent audio quality through those little speakers), it's the bandwidth of the phone network, specifically the parts that are still analogue, copper cable. They typically filter audio out above 3.5kHz leaving most voice signals still intelligable, but really screwing up music!

I would probably quite like some of the music if it didn't sound so terrible.. I'm with Marko, I reckon it's all a clever ploy. They're not busy, you're not in a queue, they're sitting there drinking tea and laughing at the suckers subjected to hours of tin. Then keeping tally at how many give up.
