PBS Game Show: How Minecraft Generates Such Huge Builds

24 March 2015 - 12:43 PM

Ran across this yesterday. I thought it was fascinating how Minecraft manages their procedural world generation.

Kind of left me wondering how come more games don't use this mechanism, and could it be combined with a traditional MMO for some kind of Sandbox/Theme Park hybrid?

PBS Game show has some other good Minecraft episodes in their archives, too.

Elly_Roo's Application (Ethawn's other half)

20 March 2015 - 07:12 PM

Hello! I'm the other half of the E & E building team.

I'm Elly, I've been with my other half for 5 years, married for four. Ethawn and I met while being in the same RP/Raid guild in WoW. He was main tank and I was his assigned healer for years before we ever talked outside of game. I've done my rounds of many of the MMO's of the past 15 years or so.

Minecraft was a big departure for me, my first real experience with a sandbox. Ethawn had to drag me to Minecraft. At first I just didn't get it.. I mean.. where were the quests? where were the dungeons?  Not long after I figured out how awesome of a wonderland it was for a creative person! Building, planting, exploring. All my favorite things now. Honestly I've become ruined for theme park MMO's.  Minecraft is where I'm most happy as a gamer.

We're social gamers at heart though, and that's why I'm looking forward to playing on a server with others. I love seeing others builds and creativity, and being an active member of a community. If there is a Skype/Teamspeak option, we are likely to be found there as well!

Outside of the game I am a 40 something Studio Artist in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where I live with my husband and two furry feline beasts. I was an Art Teacher for many years, but now stay home and paint my own things (canvases as well as anything that does or does not move- furniture, walls... cats). I'm probably most influenced by impressionist painters, and especially like doing pet portraits.
