I want to make a similar challenge, except you start out underground. At y:65 or maybe lower? In a small room with a chest. Almost the entire world would be filled bedrock to sky with normal stone and ore. In somewhat nearby locations would be a couple more rooms with extra supplies, some lava, etc. No caves or dungeons; everything would be solid rock the player tunnels through. At one location somewhat far away, there would be a "normal" area with grass, trees, sunlight, sky, etc. Not large, just enough for a really splendid-looking above-ground "reward."

So my question is, is this possible? I downloaded MCEdit but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to use it. I can fill chunks with normal terrain but that's about it. I could take a while to learn it, but I want to know if the idea is even possible before spending time on this.

Anyway, thought somebody here might have some good input. Of course I'll post it when/if I finish. Thanks.
