What shall we Rebirth?

06 December 2011 - 04:28 PM

I thought I would start this, since I see the other Limboans so rarely. Does anyone have any big ideas for our Rebirth limbo zone? Lordhalftruth and I built a little safe-spawn zone, and I know he's been hard at work on his stuff. Does anybody have ideas for a group project, maybe? I've started collecting red stone dust for potential machines/mine cart tracks, etc.

Good day! From MattyQ

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to say thanks again for your vouches and general support—everyone has been great. =)

If you didn't read my application post, allow me to reintroduce myself. I'm MattyQ! I'm 25, and in real life, operate as a full-time grad student (currently pursuing my MFA in Creative Writing), and as the Young Adult library assistant for Roanoke County Public Library system in Virginia. I'm a huge proponent of gaming and technology in the library, and as such helped get a Minecraft server running for our patrons. I do some graphic design and web stuff on the side.

When I'm not here, at work, or at school, I'm probably in Skyrim. Forever. @_@

What are your plans for your zone?

30 November 2011 - 01:51 PM

This is kind of a conversational question, but I was curious—what plans do you have for your zone? I'm just curious about how the styles of playing vary from person to person.

How often do you play? How many people are usually on?

LordHalfTruth started that great "Introduce Yourself" thread, and I thought I would take a similar opportunity to ask a quick question (questions, even!).

How often do you usually play on the SixtyGig server? How many people are usually playing at the same time? And, how often do you end up running into other people in-game?

MattyQ's Application

28 November 2011 - 05:09 AM

Hello everybody,

I'm so glad SixtyGig is finally open for applications again. Some of you may have noticed me lurking on the forums for the past month or so, in what some of my friends thought was a madman's search for a Minecraft server that wasn't moderated by the iron fist of a gaggle of capricious 11-year-olds. Well, here's my attempt. It seems to be pretty tough to get an application through, so I hope I will make the grade.

IGN: MattyQ
Age: 24 (25 tomorrow!)
Location: Roanoke, VA (transplant from New York)

Why I want to join:

Please accept this extended metaphor as my reason.

Minecraft is a sea of trolls, children, giant pokemon sculptures, and the "lulz," (as the kids call it nowadays, apparently). In an attempt to find some new, promised land of servers, I began a search for "mature" Minecraft players. After weathering the storm of NSFW content the search dumped on me, I saw on the horizon an island, a safe haven. SixtyGig. But like mythic Atlantis, just as I found SixtyGig I had to watch it sink beneath the waves, as applications closed for a month or so. I vowed I would look upon its golden palaces again, and so I have waited patiently for SixtyGig to rise, and open its doors once more.

Seriously though, pretty much every other Minecraft survival server I've stumbled on is pretty bad. There seems to be no respect for players from the moderators, or players for mods. Almost every other server advertised as "Mature" doesn't mean... well, you know what it means. I didn't. It was terrifying. I've been looking for a group of regular people to play Minecraft with. I know this group is pretty selective, so I don't have any expectations about getting in, but I hope you'll seriously consider me.

How I found you:

Google is a marvelous thing, and it is how I tracked down SixtyGig. I also gave a shout to Rayvolution via the official Minecraft forums to get a feel for the leadership, and he was nice enough to answer my questions.

A little about me:

You may not care, but for those of you who do, here's some info. I currently work full time as the Young Adult library assistant for Roanoke County Public Library system, helping out with programming, the YA website, as well as running the library's Minecraft server for teens. I also attend graduate school full time, pursuing my Master of Fine Arts in that most employable of paths, creative writing. I'm a huge proponent of technology and new media in the library (video games, ebooks, computers, etc), and have been pushing my system to stay on top of the technology curve. In my free time, I try to convince my wife to play video games, helplessly watch my dog destroy things, and do some web and graphic design.

Some screenshots:

Some of the stuff I do on Minecraft involves trying to turn the SMP into a sort of RPG following a story, and as such, sometimes we need "props." Sorry for the night-time pictures. You can see in the background of the rudimentary castle a collapsed tower on the ground.

For more practical gameplay, I've been experimenting with redstone. This is an attempt at an undetectable trap. The metal door doesn't serve as part of the trap, just to keep baddies out. Anyway, you see a plain hallway.

By flipping a switch,

Pistons eject blocks from the walls and floor, forcing the invader into a lava pit. The trap is easy to reset, just requires dropping one redstone torch.

Finally, here's a "light switch" I've been working on:

A player entering the room is forced to walk over at least one pressure plate, which uses pistons to raise glass windows from below the floor. Lava lights the room from behind the glass. I'm still trying to tweak the pistons to work such that you can use a switch to turn the lights back "off" by forcing the windows back underground.

Conclusion:

So that's my application. I'm happy to answer questions, etc. I'll drop a few more screenshots on here as they seem appropriate. Thanks so much for your time!
