My initial application was done in the Spring, back when zones were in place. I did quite a bit of reading up on the server and was eager to join. I applied again mid-summer. I didn't catch onto the transition from grids to individual maps until after I was accepted. I'm doubt that I would have re-applied if I had realized that change, as to me individual maps really is nothing more than Single Player with a chat element.

I've been playing MC for quite a while, and it's always been on free-build maps. The big difference for me, though, is I've been a moderator for 14 months, so when I scout out land I protect it, which disables others from using that region. It allows me to build comfortably, without concern of others misunderstanding my boundaries and accidentally tampering with plans.

Without adding all the modifications and plug-ins that I'm used to seeing, I think a gridded system makes the most sense. Maybe keep the grids small - 200x200 max - so that their impact, if a player leaves, isn't terribly significant. I don't really see the point in resetting grids or demolishing old buildings, if the map is large enough and the player base is tight.

In Topic: Looking for a new map seed for your future map?

Are there any seed sites that are actually decent? My preliminary Google results were disappointing.

I'm looking for a map that reminds me of home (Maine).

LIKES
* Taiga
* Forest
* Lakes & Rivers

DISLIKES
* Swampland
* Extreme hills
* Desert

Plains and Tundra are okay, as I can easily convert them to Taiga and Forest.

I can relate to learning about shift late, and the lava stories are all painfully familiar. I might add my infuriating realization - you cannot harvest diamond ores with a stone pick.

In Topic: How do you go about your build(s) ?

It depends on the build type.

If it's something small and simple, I make it up as I go. I frequently step back, make many minor edits, and it tends to be a structure that's always evolving.

Sometimes, I feel inspired by something specific. In those situations, I'll save photographs for reference, think about how best to achieve it and do some basic sketches.

And lastly, there are times I use actual house plans. I convert the measurements to how I think it will make the most sense in the minecraft world.
